Tom Ford joined Gucci, which at that time was a failing brand, as the company’s chief women’s ready-to-wear designer in 1990. Ford’s creative responsibilities increased steadily and, in 1994, he became Gucci’s creative director. His designs oozed sensuality, sexuality and glamour. Ford was probably the most influential fashion designer of his generation. Under his creative management, the house of Gucci flourished. When Gucci acquired the house of Yves Saint Laurent in 2000, Ford became its creative director. By the time Ford left in 2004, the Gucci Group was valued at $10 billion. Of all the modern, contemporary designers, Tom Ford’s pieces are among the most collectible and the collect-ability will only enhance as time passes.
